Clever Digs: IHG Hotels & Resorts and Josh.ai Create Hotel Room of the Future

Josh.ai

Introducing artificial intelligence in a way that feels natural. IHG Hotels & Resorts – known for venerable brands like InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts and Hotel Indigo – has designed the guest room of the future, partnering with Josh.ai to create a voice-controlled smart room at the Kimpton Rowan hotel in Palm Springs, CA. IHG is the first global hotel company to deploy Josh.ai – which builds upon its award-winning presence in the world’s most advanced residential properties – and is the only AI on the market committed to privacy, data security, and natural interactions with connected living spaces. A 2021 report from Euromonitor found that consumers are actively seeking digital services and experiences, like Josh.ai, which empower users through inclusivity, improve their quality of life, and promote personalization and well-being. The Josh.ai software features purpose-built natural language processing that understands multiple requests in one command; searches for specific music and video content through deep-linking; and leverages location and contextual awareness. Guests also have limitless capabilities at their fingertips through the intuitively designed Josh app. “We are constantly exploring next-generation technology to give guests epic experiences as they return to our hotels,” said Brian McGuinness, SVP, Global Guest Experience Shared Services, IHG Hotels & Resorts. “Josh.ai has never been used in a hotel room before and we look forward to discovering how AI can be more widely adopted by our properties around the world. We take great pride in pushing ourselves when it comes to digital innovation in hospitality.” A first for hotel guest rooms, each brand has been thoughtfully selected to promote well-being and performance, with a design aesthetic fitting of IHG’s Luxury & Lifestyle collection. The “hotel room of the future” explores the potential of guest interaction with their environment and employs connected devices that are borrowed from luxury smart homes across the globe, including:  Josh Micro is expanding its capabilities beyond convenient and secure automation of the room by introducing built-in hotel concierge responses, ensuring guests are informed of everything the Kimpton and Palm Springs has to offer during their stay. Ketra lighting, by Lutron, makes its hotel room debut, promoting well-being through tunable lighting that transitions with the natural rhythms of daylight. Guests can set the perfect mood by adjusting the color temperature from warm to cool, as well as the vibrancy and saturation of their lights. Lutron shades seamlessly provide privacy while balancing exposure to daylight in the bathroom.  Sonos speakers with an Arc soundbar tune every stay to the right beat with access to any genre, album, artist, or song. Whether a guest is watching TV or listening to music, the room will be filled with immersive and impeccable surround sound.  Samsung’s Frame TV transforms from an art piece to a high-performance 4K QLED display when guests are ready to watch their favorite content.  DISH TV offers guests a fully integrated live entertainment experience with the power of voice or tactile control. Watching favorite channels, shows, sports, and movies has never been easier. Roku provides access to popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and more so that guests can enjoy the comforts of home by binge watching a show or turning on a movie.  IPORT is powering Josh.ai’s unlimited manual control of the room with its sophisticated iPad mounting solution. Guests will always have access to adjust the room to their exact specifications through the user-friendly Josh app.  “At Josh.ai we are hyper focused on delivering experiences that are simple, privacy-focused, and magical,” said Alex Capecelatro, CEO of Josh.ai. “Our partnership with IHG couldn’t be a better fit as we endeavor together to transform the hospitality experience with natural voice control of lighting, shades, music, TV, and more! For example, guests can give a command like, ‘set the lights to warm white, listen to Hotel California, watch the Golf Channel, and when is happy hour?’ and Josh.ai will handle the rest.” To learn more about the “hotel room of the future,” please visit this interactive digital tour.

How Can Hotels Convince Guests They're Safe After COVID-19?

HKeeper

Not a day goes by that we don’t hear information about the coronavirus and its negative impact on travel and hospitality businesses. The truth is, the pandemic is temporary and sooner or later it will pass. Thus, we should continue to plan for the future, as well as take steps to reduce long-term damage from the virus and strive for a faster recovery. They say never look back, unless you want to go that way. We want to help the hospitality industry to not look back and move forward, so as to overcome the difficulties that COVID-19 presents, and here’s how. According to the recent statistics and projection of hotel industry experts, COVID-19 will make hotels take a harder look at safety-conscious procedures across the whole world. Guests will not only need a clean room to sleep in, but they’ll also need to trust that it is indeed clean. Today, when remote working via digital platforms becomes a new form of the norm, using technology solutions may help hotels to convey the message to their guests that their rooms are clean, free of germs, and safe to stay in. It may help to build trust in guests' minds, especially for those who are eager to get back on the road but are still afraid of the idea of staying in a hotel. While previously guests weren’t provided with any information about the room cleaning process and could only see how clean their room was upon arrival, today HKeeper provides guests with a Cleanliness Certificate, confirming that cleaning and disinfection were done in the room prior to their arrival. The main point here is that Cleanliness Certificate generates automatically after the cleaning is done and based on a checklist which was used by the person who performed the cleaning. Providing such transparency is a straight way to regain the trust of guests! Cleanliness Certificates can be customized and include a Checklist & Inspection list according to the COVID-19 protocol that each accommodation provider must-have. A certificate can be issued for each room, public area, or a whole hotel. It can include the Cleaning person’s name and their qualification, Manager's contact info who is responsible for Cleanliness, rooms photo, and hotel Logo. The Certificate can be sent digitally to the guest through email or handed a printed copy at the checking-in. We believe that having Cleanliness Certificates will not only help our industry to adjust to the effects of a global pandemic faster but will also bring travelers additional peace of mind about a safe stay in your hotel. Contact us to know more about the Cleanliness Certificates generated by HKeeper.

Reducing Friction in Hotel Guest Service: A Recap of ‘Voice’ at CES 2020

Volara

More than 170,000 people descended on Las Vegas last week to see the most transformative technology products on the planet during the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show. New this year was a “Travel & Tourism” educational track that highlighted how smarter and safer technologies are transforming the travel and tourism industries. A technology that remained in the spotlight during the three-session program was voice – such as the in-room solution atop Amazon Alexa powered by Volara that enables hotel guests to request services on voice command in the privacy of their rooms or the newly launched 29 language translation tool for hotel front and concierge desks known as the Google Assistant’s interpreter mode. Both solutions improve guest engagement and mitigate the challenges many travelers face when at a hotel. Removing friction from the hotel guest experience with voice technology has the potential to redefine hospitality.  “Today’s travelers expect and demand the same mobility and connectivity they enjoy every day along every step of a journey,” said Dorothy Creamer, CES Travel & Tourism Session Moderator and Editor of Hospitality Technology. “As voice becomes the preferred method for guests to request service and information in their daily lives, travel providers will need to follow suit and use voice as a primary platform to remove friction from experiences. Empowering staff with voice-enabled devices will also increase efficiency resulting in happier guests and staff.” As Creamer noted, voice technology solves a problem that has taunted the travel industry for years: Friction.  The three sessions of the Travel and Tourism educational track highlighted the following: “AI and VR in Travel” discussed how travel companies are using voice assistants to answer travelers’ questions and stay competitive. The announcement that Viceroy Hotel Group – after three full hotel deployments – is going ‘all in’ preceded CES and brought this to life. “The Travel Experience of the Future” looked at how technology – including voice assistants – are leading advancements and disruption in the travel industry. The session explored how hotels, airports and cruise lines are leveraging this technology to enhance the guest experience. The simultaneous announcement from American Airlines that they’ve adopted the Google Assistant’s interpreter mode re-emphasized the points made in this session  “Smart Tourism” focused on how technologies – including automated voice – are assisting decision-makers in enhancing efficiency, sustainability and the user experience. The improved understanding of traveler’s needs – resulting from increased communication with them and a data-driven understanding of those communications when voice assistants serve as an intermediary – crystallized this session. “Named the ‘Best Voice Activated Tech Product of 2020’ by HotelTechReport last week, we were especially thrilled to see voice technologies taking center stage at CES 2020,” said David Berger, Volara CEO. “By adding Volara-powered voice assistants in hotel rooms, as well as now at front desks and concierge stands, we are enabling operators to reduce friction in guest service – extending a familiar on command home experience to the hotel environment. We’ve spent the past four years developing conversation-management software that improves the accuracy of interactions while ensuring hotel guest privacy so travelers can have immersive, interactive and memorable experiences without friction. Central to this strategy has been collaborations with the leading natural language processing platforms that guests know and love from their homes, cars, and phones to thrive in these unique commercial environments. We believe on command is the new on demand in hospitality, and we are eager to see what the future holds for this application.” CES® 2020 is the world’s largest and most influential tech event, where the entire technology ecosystem gathers to conduct business, launch products, build brands and partner to solve some of the world’s most challenging issues. More than 4,500 exhibitors launched nearly 20,000 new transformative tech products to more than 170,000 attendees January 7 to 10, encompassing 5G connectivity, artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, smart cities and resilience, sports, robotics and more. CES 2020 featured new and expanded exhibit areas, 300 conference sessions with 1,100 speakers, and more than 1,200 startups from 45+ countries.
